Crematorium

The Montjuïc crematorium, inaugurated in 1997, is a two-storey building, each of more than 600m2. This space has 5 cremation ovens and 3 dioxin filtering plants, totally respectful of the environment. Otherwise, it has a waste heat recovery plant that is released during the cremation process to be able to supply hot water, heating and cooling to the entire facility.

It has a multi-confessional room with a capacity for 200 people where the farewell ceremony can be held on the same day as the cremation or when the ashes are collected.

We adapt to new needs with advanced technology

Barcelona cemeteries also adapts to the new realities, demands and needs of citizens and it is for this reason that families are provided with a welcoming and pleasant environment to be able to visualize in a more intimate, comfortable and friendly way the introduction of the coffin inside the crematorium. It is a space enabled with immersive virtual reality technology.

Aware of the difficulty of traveling, on occasion, for some family members, we have a Streaming ceremony service, in order to cover virtually and live the farewell ceremony of a deceased person.

Cremation process

The cremation process that Cementiris de Barcelona currently carries out is carried out with specialized and perfected techniques that mark a qualitative leap compared to the first cremations in Barcelona.

Identification of the deceased: Before starting the cremation process, a non-combustible fireproof stone is placed in the coffin with an identification code, unique for each deceased. This stone will remain with the resulting ashes until they are deposited in the urn.

Duration: The cremation process lasts approximately two hours. After the cremation, the ashes are deposited in the urn chosen by the family, with the prior identification of the stone deposited at the beginning of the cremation.

Delivery of the ashes to the family: With the aim of shortening the procedures for relatives and with the prior request of the family, Barcelona Cemeteries offers the possibility of carrying out the delivery of the ashes in a within 4 hours and always during Montjuïc Crematorium hours. In this sense, families are provided with a welcoming and pleasant environment to be able to pick them up.
